European Council reached agreement over the 2030 Framework for climate and energy policies
The European Council has reached an agreement over the 2030 climate and energy policy framework.
The council has agreed a binding EU target of an at least 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This target will be delivered collectively by the EU, with all Member States involved in the effort.
A binding EU target of 27% at least is set for the share of renewable energy consumed in EU in 2030.
For energy efficiency, an indicative target of at least 27% at EU level is set for improving energy efficiency in 2030.
The EU hopes that its “ambitious” 2030 deal will set the tone for next year’s Paris 2015 agreement which will see the world’s first global climate change agreement negotiated that calls for action from all countries.
